Records of My Travels in Okinawa ~vol.5 Okinawa Souvenirs~

In Okinawa, you can buy unique souvenirs. For example, have you ever tried drinking "Hub sake"?

Hub is a highly toxic snake living in Okinawa. This sake is created by catching a hub alive and soaking it in awamori, the strong Okinawan liquor. If you give hub sake to your friends, they will surely be surprised! It's guaranteed to go over well.

The next souvenir I recommend you to get is "dragon fruit". Its bright red pericarp actually looks like a dragon's scale! While traveling, I often look around the markets, because I want to understand local eating habits.

I bought a dragon fruit and tried to eat it at home.

After cutting the dragon fruit, blood-red juice dripped from kitchen knife.  I conjured up horrifying visions of the cutting board covered in blood instead... Luckily, it was only juice :-D

The dragon fruit was refreshing and slightly sweet. I thought that eating it with honey made it more delicious.

The most popular souvenir among my family was "Sata andagi", Okinawan black sugar doughnuts.

The surface is  crispy and the inside is fluffy. There are various flavors such as black sesame seeds and coconut in addition to the brown sugar taste. Would you enjoy tasting the pastries with the dragon fruit juice in a café?

In addition to these souvenirs, there are ornaments of the legendary beast Shiisa, colorful Ryukyu glasses and more.. Okinawa is full of souvenirs that appeal to the travelers' sense of fun.

You can buy these souvenirs at Kokusai Street. Try to find a nice treasure specially for you.
